Chapter 2 · Explain this like I'm a manager

The Contingency View: It Depends

30-second explanation

There is no one best way to manage. The right structure, leadership style, or control system depends on the situation: the technology, the environment, the size of the organization, and the people. The goal is the best fit, not the best practice.

Example

A tight, rule-based style works in an operating room or a nuclear plant. The same style smothers a creative agency, where loose structure and autonomy fit better.

What a manager should ask

What about this situation should change how I manage it?

Common mistake

Copying what worked somewhere else. A practice that fits a startup can fail in a hospital, and the reverse.

Use it at work

Name one management practice your workplace copied from somewhere else. Does it fit your situation, or was it borrowed because it was popular?

Test yourself

Is 'it depends' a cop-out answer on an exam?

Show the answer

Only if you stop there. A strong answer says what it depends on (environment, task, people, size) and which choice fits which conditions.
