Chapter 6 · Explain this like I'm a manager

Realistic Job Preview

30-second explanation

A realistic job preview shows candidates a job's drawbacks as well as its attractions. People who would quit self-select out, and those who join have accurate expectations, which reduces early turnover.

Example

A call center shows applicants a video of an angry caller and the real pace of the floor. Fewer people accept the offer, but far fewer quit in the first 90 days.

What a manager should ask

What would a new hire wish someone had told them on day one?

Common mistake

Selling the job too hard. Overpromising wins the hire and loses the employee.

Use it at work

Write three honest sentences about the hardest part of your job. Would hearing them have changed your decision to take it?

Test yourself

Why would a company want fewer people to accept its job offers?

Show the answer

Because the right fewer people stay longer, saving the cost of turnover and rehiring.
