Chapter 5 · Explain this like I'm a manager

Centralization and Delegation

30-second explanation

Centralization means decisions are made at the top; decentralization pushes them down to the people closest to the work. Delegation is how a manager hands down authority. The right level depends on speed, expertise, and risk.

Example

A hotel lets front-desk staff comp a night's stay up to $200 without asking a manager. Guests get fixed problems on the spot.

What a manager should ask

Who is closest to the information this decision needs?

Common mistake

Delegating the task without the authority. 'Fix it, but check with me first' is not delegation.

Use it at work

List three decisions your team waits on a manager for. Which could safely move down?

Test yourself

A company wants consistent branding in 40 countries but fast local marketing. Centralize or decentralize?

Show the answer

Both: centralize the brand standards, decentralize the local campaigns within them.
